Will sealing stop my dusty basement floor?

Does basement floor sealing stop moisture?
It reduces surface moisture and vapour coming up through the slab, which is usually enough to keep a floor dry-feeling and ready for flooring. What it is not is a cure for an active water problem. If you get standing water, seepage after rain, or a wet floor every spring, that's a drainage and waterproofing issue, and a surface sealer won't fix it. Can you seal a basement floor before carpet or flooring?
Yes, and it's smart. Sealing the concrete before you lay carpet, laminate, or vinyl locks down dust and cuts surface moisture and vapour transmission that can otherwise get trapped under the new floor. We seal, it cures, and your flooring installer works on a clean, stable slab. Just make sure any real moisture problem is solved first, because flooring over a wet slab traps the problem.
What's the difference between sealing and waterproofing a basement?
Sealing treats the surface of a sound concrete floor: it stops dusting, reduces surface moisture and vapour, and makes the slab easier to keep clean. Waterproofing is a bigger job that manages water pressure from outside the foundation, usually with drainage, sump systems, membranes, or exterior excavation. We do sealing. We do not do waterproofing, drainage, or foundation work, and we won't pretend a seal replaces them.
Does sealing stop a leaking basement?
No. If water is actively getting in through the floor, the wall-floor joint, or foundation cracks, sealing the surface will not stop it, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you a temporary patch. A leaking basement needs a waterproofing or drainage contractor. Once that's genuinely fixed and the slab is dry, sealing the floor for dust and surface moisture makes sense as a finishing step.
Does basement floor sealing help with radon?
It can reduce minor soil-gas entry by tightening the pores and hairline surface cracks in the slab, but sealing is not a certified radon mitigation system and we don't market it as one.
