Concrete Efflorescence: What It Is, What Causes It, What Actually Helps

The white, chalky powder or crusty residue on your concrete is efflorescence — mineral salts that water dissolved inside the slab and left behind on the surface when it evaporated. The white stuff itself is harmless and brushes off. What Efflorescence Is — and What's Happening Underneath
Efflorescence appears as white powder, chalky haze or crusty deposits on concrete, pavers, brick or block — often after rain, snowmelt or a damp spring, and frequently worst on newer concrete in its first year or two.
Here's the mechanism: water inside the slab dissolves naturally occurring salts (calcium hydroxide and others), migrates to the surface, evaporates, and leaves the salts behind as that white residue. Sealing treats the cause, not just the white stuff
You can brush or wash efflorescence off — and it'll come back, because the water pathway that created it is still open. A penetrating sealer closes that pathway: it fills the pores and capillaries the moisture travels through, so water stops migrating to the surface and depositing salts. That stops the recurring white haze, and it addresses the far bigger issue the efflorescence was warning you about — water inside the slab feeding freeze-thaw damage. One honest note: heavy existing deposits should be cleaned off before sealing (we handle surface prep as part of the job), and if moisture is rising from a chronic drainage problem underneath, fixing the drainage matters too — sealing the top of a slab sitting in water is treating the symptom.
